CHARITY workers were reduced to tears by mindless yobs on a £10,000 vandalism spree.
Months of planning went up in smoke when a fundraising venue was destroyed.
Cold-hearted intruders struck at Pea Farm, in Stanley, County Durham, after Cancer Research’s annual Harperley Music Festival, trashing the site and causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.
The vandals torched 10 brand new Portaloos, slashed the panels of a rented marque and blasted fire extinguishers everywhere.
Now the devastated organisers of the family event have been left with an anxious wait to find out if they will have to pick up the bill for the damage, estimated to be around £10,000 in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Bill Burgess, chairman of the Stanley branch of Cancer Research UK, said: “We are all so upset by this. My wife Anne, who is also on the charity committee, was in tears all day when she found out what happened. The festival on Saturday was fantastic and we had hundreds of people come and enjoy themselves.
“Then on Sunday morning we received a call to say the Portaloos were on fire.
“By the time we got there, there was nothing left except black smolders.
“The marquee has been slashed beyond repair as well. “We have insurance through Cancer Research UK’s head office but we will have to wait to see if they will pay out.”
Mr Burgess, a bus driver from Stanley, County Durham, is pleading for anyone with information about the incident to come forward. “We worked so hard,” he said. “Everybody said it was a great day and then this happened.
“The Cancer Research banners were up everywhere so whoever did it would have known they were attacking a charity. We just can’t understand why someone would do that.
“This was supposed to be about raising money to help people with cancer but now it’s been ruined.”
The Harperley Music Festival, held on Saturday, is now in its second year and is one of Cancer Research Stanley’s main money-spinning events.
Some 800 people attended last year’s festival, held outside of the Harperly Hotel, so organisers decided to move to larger site this year.
